Remember the days of your life (upcoming)
Every one of our lives is precious and worth remembering. That’s why most of our phones are full of photos.
But photos only capture where we’ve been and what we saw, not what we thought and felt. This class will give you fun, easy exercises and inspiring examples that loosen up your memory and warm up your writing muscles so you can capture those thoughts and feelings for yourself and share them with others.
This beginner-friendly class is for people interested in any form of writing: poetry, memoir, or other prose.
As a bonus and as time permits, we will also discuss combining simple video-making with our writing.
This class will run 5 weeks. We will meet once a week for about 90 minutes. Weeks 1-4 will focus on writing and sharing what we write (as feels comfortable to participants, this is never forced). Week 5 will focus on video making.
Class begins September 2025. I’ll send out as schedule survey to find the best time and day of week for all who are interested.
Course fee is $150, or $130 for anyone who has preordered my forthcoming book.
Monday Night Poetry on Meetup (continuing)
This is a weekly poetry group that alternates between generative and critique workshops.
Fueling Our Writing from Our Deep Memories (past)
(Presented at the Margins Conference, Denver CO, September 2024)
Actors create characters by looking for aspects of themselves that resonate with the character they are playing.
Method Acting exercises are a form of self-guided meditation to help them dip into deep memories. This is a useful tool in fiction, memoir, etc., as well, to safely draw on deep memories and all our senses to add depth, texture, and 'voice' to our writing, without being overcome by possible trauma.
The workshop will consist of a brief discussion, followed by practice going into this deep memory state, doing some writing, and breathing our way out again, and then sharing and discussion of some of the generated work.
Takeaway: a new tool to add depth, texture, and 'voice' to your writing, also hopefully the germ of some new writing.
